Rather than a Strength (Athletics) check, a Constitution (Athletics) check might be used for a long swim.
The situation:
Usually, an Athletics check would have been Strength (Athletics) but because of the situation I find myself in, my DM has called for a Constitution (Athletics) check instead.
Usually for Athletics checks, I would roll a d20 and then add my Strength Modifier, along with my Proficiency Bonus, giving a total of +6.
Because it's a Constitution variant, I instead add my Constitution Modifier, along with my Proficiency Bonus, giving a total of +4.
